100w LED HIGH BAY LIGHTS High bays are designed to be used in very high areas to provide well distributed and uniform light for open areas. The key element of the fitting which will help guarantee the correct light output is the reflectors and optics used by the fitting. As per our research (on e-commerce sites selling solar PV) and resources from the solar PV industry, cost of a PV module (just the panel) costs anywhere between Rs 40 to Rs 60 per watt of power generated (depending on the quantity you are buying). The modules having higher Watt power capacity are cheaper per Watt power as compared to modules with lower Watt power capacity. The efficiency of solar panels is also better for modules of higher Watt power as compared to modules of lower Watt power. There is not much difference in price between imported and Indian solar panels. But if you are looking for a subsidy, then the only option that you have is to go for Made in India panels. If you are living in an area where power cuts are less frequent and you want to implement solar PV system to reduce your electricity bills, then the best solution would be to go for a Grid Connected Solar PV System. It will cost you anywhere between 75, 000-90, 000 per kWp (cost varies based on the type of inverter and panels you choose). If you are living in an area where there are frequent power cuts, then the best solution for you would be to go for an “Off Grid” Solar PV System. Off Grid Solar PV system will include batteries, which are an expensive part of the system and these would need replacement every few years (4-7 years). There are two types of Solar PV Cells: Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline. The difference between the two is that Monocrystalline is made of single silicon crystal whereas Multi-crystalline PV is made up of multiple crystals. A monocrystalline is more efficient in converting solar energy into electricity per sq meter area than a multi-crystalline PV. Will Adding Solar Reduce Cost of Electricity? This is part three of our series on understanding the cost of electricity. In part one we discussed how electricity in India is just as expensive as in the US, but nowhere the same quality. In part two we talked about how electricity gets to our homes. We did a cost break-down and discussed why is it as expensive as it is. Today we will throw solar in the mix and see how it will impact our electricity rates. We saw previously that what we pay for electricity includes the cost of generation plus the cost of transportation and distribution and taxes. In addition there are losses along the way (theft, subsidy) which are also paid for by us. What happens when we throw solar in the mix? Does our cost go up or down? We have all heard of these large solar plants that are being commissioned at various places in India. These are spread out over 10s to 100s of acres of land, and generate 100s of mega watts (MW or 1, 000, 000) of electricity. These plants are just like the thermal power plants as in, they are huge power plants that sell the power they generate to the grid. Compared to a coal burning plant (thermal), a solar farm is certainly less polluting (no air, water or land pollution). But it does use a lot of land, which cannot be used for other purposes. It is also currently more expensive. The cost of electricity generated from a solar plant has come down to Rs 2.97 [1] recently. Compare this with NTPC’s costs to generate electricity from coal: Rs 2. Solar is still 50% more expensive. Throw solar in the mix, and it seems our rates will go up. Electricity will cost more – higher generation costs and the same transmission, distribution and tax component. The beauty of solar though is it can be added anywhere in the chain. Lets say the DisCom (say BSES in Delhi) puts a plant in its distribution region (Delhi). They just eliminated the transmission costs! This should reduce our costs, right!? Likely no. Chances are the land on which the DisCom sets up the plant is more expensive (think land in Delhi compared to the dessert). It might also be a smaller plant than a solar farm, which means it costs more to setup and manage per unit. The cost of electricity it generates will thus be higher, which negates the benefits of saving on transmission costs. An example cost (from large rooftop plants) puts the cost of electricity at Rs 5.5 to 6.5 per unit in Delhi area. Add the DisCom costs and taxes, and we save nothing. How about in the future – solar is all the time getting cheaper, so our rates will go down right? Maybe. Lets imagine the cost of generation from solar becomes zero. That will save us Rs 2, its still a small part of the overall because we still need that unit of electricity to be transported to us. And there are still taxes! Here is the great news! We can save a lot more. In fact we can save it all – we can pay close to nothing for electricity today. I mentioned that the beauty of solar is that can be installed anywhere in the chain. If we can bypass the DisCom, we can reduce the cost of electricity to the lowest it can be. And we can do this through a rooftop solar plant of our own. Switch to Solar today. How Many Solar Panels Do I Need? It’s one of the most common questions we hear from our clients at the start of a solar project: How many solar panels do I need? We’ve got a two-part answer to help you decide. The answer to this question is largely determined by two things: how much electricity you use and how much electricity your solar panels will produce. How much electricity do you use? The best way to figure this out is to look at your electric bill. Your bill should state the amount of electricity you’ve used over the last year. The amount will be measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). You’ll probably notice that your energy consumption changes through the year. For example, it might be higher in the summer months (when the air conditioner is running) and lower in the winter. Ideally, your solar panels will provide enough power to cover your total energy consumption every year. But even if you’re using solar to cover just a fraction of your energy needs, you’ll still be saving money in the long term — not to mention you’ll be making a huge change in your carbon footprint. How much electricity will your solar panels produce? This is decided by several different things, including… Your location. The geographic location of your home determines your “solar insolation” — in other words, how much sunlight can hit your roof. Your output. The energy your solar panels produce is measured in wattage.
